Breckland
Verbascums
We came across these plants in
Hampshire despite them having originated only
30 miles
away from our nursery!
Huge interests surrounds these
plants. They have been featured regularly on TV and many
gardening magazines.Demand
is sure to be high.
The enthusiasm of Marina
Christopher of Phoenix Perennial Plants in Hampshire
prompted a visit. We were greeted by a stand of these
beautiful Breckland Verbascums and quickly became
converts! Marina explained that they were bred by
Patricia Cooper of Magpies Nursery, Mundford, (known as
the ‘Breckland’ area of Norfolk) just down the
road from us! We were so excited by their colours and
that they are truly perennial and even have an early morning scent
reminiscent of Mahonia, that we agreed to promote them.
Relishing a sunny (preferably protected from early
morning sun), well-drained and somewhat lean soil
they will flower continuously if spent flower stems are removed.
Verbascum ‘Annie
May’ – flowers of deepest damson, retaining its colour
well. Foliage and stems also attractively suffused with
purple. Named after Pat Cooper’s aunt. 90cm, 5-9, PD 5
Verbascum ‘Apricot
Sunset’ – Apricot and
pink shades with darker buds. Evocative of a Breckland
sunset! 100cm, 5-9, PD 5
Verbascum ‘Norfolk Dawn’ – the most
vigorous and bold of the series. Large flowers in subtle
shades of buff and biscuit. Unlike others within the
series, blooms in successive flushes up its stem whereas
all the rest begin to open at the base of the flower
spike and progress upwards.
80cm,
5-9, PD 5
