Dahlia David Howard
AGM
Introduced by owner of Howard
Nurseries, David Howard. Back in the 1950’s David was a
keen Dahlia enthusiast and spent many hours selecting
and breeding Dahlias.
David selected this
promising plant from a batch of seedlings derived from
the ever popular Dahlia Bishop of Llandaff AGM. His
plant is an easy plant to grow and is a prolific
flowerer, sporting large double, burnt-orange flowers
shown off to perfection against the compact, dark purple
foliage.
It is a fitting tribute
that Dahlia David Howard has also received the
prestigious Royal Horticultural Society’s, Award of
Garden Merit. As with most Dahlias, D. David Howard
enjoys a rich, moisture retentive soil in full sun and
looks terrific in the ‘Hot’ border or as an accent plant
to draw the eye.
Flowering from July
until the first frosts will be ensured, if spent flowers
are removed and copious water applied during dry
weather.
A well-grown plant
is a magnificent sight and will reach upwards of
90cms(36inch). Tubers can be over-wintered the same as
any other Dahlia by lifting after the first frosts have
blackened the foliage. Remove the dead leaves and stem
and store in a frost-free room either still in the pot
or in dry peat or sand. In the nursery we invert all the
pots after removing the foliage and store them on
shelves in the potting shed until new growth resumes
naturally in the spring.
