Hemerocallis Cathy’s Sunset
As so often happens, the
sharp eye of a keen plantsman can make all the difference. In this case,
the eagle eye of staff member, Michael Foreman spotted a chance
seedling amongst a group of Hemerocallis Stella de Oro.
The plant was of similar dwarf stature to H. Stella de Oro but the
beautiful and prolific bi-coloured flowers of yellow and terracotta
stood out from the yellow ‘Stella’ like a beacon! Hemerocallis Cathy’s
Sunset is like a better behaved and diminutive version of Hemerocallis
Frans Hals and Michael decided to name the plant in honour of his
daughter.
Being a compact grower at only 60cm (24inch) high and flowering from
June-July it is ideal to plant alongside path edges or towards the
front of a sunny border. As with all Hemerocallis, H.Cathy’s Sunset,
enjoys a fertile, moisture retentive soil but is tolerant of dryer
soils and some shade, although better conditions will be rewarded with
more flowers.
Be sure to plant the crown of the plant no more than 2.5cm (1inch)
below the soil surface as planting deeper may inhibit flowering.
Hemerocallis respond well to feeding and an annual mulch of garden
compost or rotted manure will help keep the plant in good condition.
Divide every 2-3 years to maintain vigour and flowering. Take healthy
outside pieces of the clump and replant, ideally in autumn, although
Hemerocallis are almost indestructible and with care, this can be
accomplished at almost any time of the year.
